Where do I pick up my share?

Are you organic?

We are considered naturally grown. 

Can I have someone else pick up my share on my behalf, if I’m not available from time to time?

Yes. 

What happens if I miss a box due to vacation, etc?

Members are responsible for picking up their box on the selected day & location.   Please have a family member or friend pick up your box.  We can not make arrangements up for missed boxes.  We donate all missed boxes to a local Food Bank.

Do you offer work shares?

Not at this time.

Can I visit the farm?

Yes.  We have several events at the farm each year for our CSA Members.

Can I split a share with my friends, or can we go in on one?

Yes. We ask that one check is sent and one primary contact person is responsible for the share. Anyone can come to pick it up. You are responsible for dividing it up for your group. No special arrangements on pick ups for divided shares.

What’s the difference between a full & half share?

Weekly Full Share is 8 items weekly.

Bi-Weekly Full Share is 8 items every other week.

Weekly Half Share is 4-5 items weekly.

How much food is in a share?

A full share is designed to be 8 items, sometimes more in the peak of the growing season. Sometimes a bit less in the slow season, yet we strive & work hard to provide 8 items for you each week.

What’s an item?

An item can be a head of lettuce, a quart of tomatoes, several cucumbers, peppers, etc. 

Can I trade my items for different produce from the stand?

Only if you pick up at the farm.   We will have a Member Exchange table set up.

Can I cancel my membership?

There are NO REFUNDS.  The money that you pay for your share is used to grow the crops for the term for which you are subscribing.  Once you subscribe, your spot is secure for the growing season.  It is up to the Member to find a replacement.  You may also choose to donate you share to a local food bank.

What if, instead of getting a news magazine every week, you got a big box of produce from a local farmer, a box of vegetables picked that very morning, bursting with flavor and nutrition? That's what you get when you subscribe to our CSA.

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is also known as "subscription farming." You buy a subscription from a local farmer just like you buy a subscription to “Newsweek” or “People”. But instead of receiving a magazine each week, you receive a "share" of fresh, locally grown vegetables.

While new in name, Community Supported Agriculture hearkens back to an earlier time - a time when people actually knew where their food came from, ate in harmony with the seasons, and enjoyed a delicious, healthy diet of pure, fresh foods.

"In season" is what our CSA is all about.  Surely, you can buy tomatoes in January - but who wants to eat cardboard tomatoes? That tomato was picked green 1500 miles away and weeks ago, then blasted with ethylene gas to make it turn red just before it landed in the produce section of your grocery store. What we have gained in convenience, we have lost in flavor, freshness, nutritional value, and human connection to each other and to the land.

When you subscribe to our CSA, however, you remake all those connections.

Of course, you won’t get tomatoes in May.  In May, your box will be full of spring onions, luscious lettuce, radishes, spinach, and other spring delights. When summer comes, you will experience an explosion of true tomato flavor with your first bite of a juicy, just-picked, sun-ripened tomato - proving once again that some things are worth waiting for!

CSA members don't so much "buy" food from our farm as become "members" of our farm. Big White Barn’s CSA provides more than just food, we offer ways for eaters to become involved in the ecological and human community that supports the farm.  Join Big White Barn’s CSA today!

Our Fall CSA season begins the week of August 30th and continues through the week of October 25th.  SOLD OUT.

NOTE:  There is only ONE share type available for our Fall CSA.

              It is a weekly share consisting of 6-8 items.

              We are not offering a payment plan for the Fall CSA.

SPRING / SUMMER CSA 2010  SOLD OUT!

Here’s how our CSA works. Participants sign up and pay in advance.  Each participant will receive a  weekly  (full share) or bi-weekly (half share) box of approximately 8 items. The season begins in June and runs until October, 2010.

An example of what your box may contain - cucumbers, quart of tomatoes (including a variety of heirlooms), herbs, bag of spinach, lettuce, peppers, baby carrots, yellow/green beans, squash, potatoes, watermelon -- whatever is ripe for picking. Definitely enough food for a family of 2-4. This year we hope to include a few specialty vegetables.... baby corn, yardlong beans, oriental radish, and more.   The beginning of the year always starts slowly with salad greens, radishes, and onions, but things pick up quickly and tomatoes, peppers, corn, watermelon and other summer fruits & vegetables are offered in abundance.

Big White Barn Produce offers home & business delivery to one location with a minimum of 15 members.  Sponsoring member (organizer) receives a FREE MEMBERSHIP.  Call or e-mail for more details.

We also deliver to DC & VA every Thursday to individual members for a minimal delivery charge.
